Broughty Ferry - Charming Stop for Coffee
The small port of Broughty Ferry is about four miles to the east of Dundee. The town has a rich history and has many fine houses that were once owned by the wealthy jute barons who built Dundee's textile fortunes. The area was once regarded as the "richest square mile in Europe". However, its history as a fishing village goes back much further and its strategic importance was recognised in the 15th Century with the building of Broughty Castle to protect the mouth of the Tay Estuary.
Today, Broughty Castle is a museum displaying Dundee's maritime history, including the story of the importance of whaling to the region - oil from whales harpooned off Greenland and Canada was in heavy demand by the jute industry.
Although the industries with which Broughty Ferry was once associated are now gone, the town remains a lovely destination with its pleasant waterfront and network of individual shops, art galleries, fine restaurants, pavement cafes and stylish bars. We particularly enjoyed a great pizza in Visocohis Ristorante. The town also offers visitors easy access to some of the finest golf courses, fishing or sightseeing to be found anywhere in Scotland. Barnhill Rock Garden is nearby and open all year and contains plants and flowers from all over the world. A natural spring and new ponds create a tranquil environment and a haven for wildlife.
